Addressing Your Nose & Throat Concerns: What You Need to Know
Nose and throat problems are among the most common health complaints seen in clinics across India — yet many patients wait too long before seeking proper care. Understanding your symptoms early can make all the difference.
At Abrol ENT & Allergy Clinic in Ludhiana, we see patients every day who have been managing nasal congestion, persistent sore throats, or unexplained voice changes on their own for months. While some mild symptoms do resolve on their own, many of these conditions have underlying causes that require professional diagnosis and treatment.
This guide is designed to help you understand the most common nose and throat concerns, what warning signs to watch for, and when it's time to consult an ENT specialist.
Common Nose Concerns
1. Chronic nasal congestion & sinusitis
Nasal congestion that lasts more than 10 days — or keeps coming back — is rarely just a "common cold." Chronic sinusitis occurs when the sinus cavities remain inflamed, causing a blocked nose, facial pressure, reduced sense of smell, and post-nasal drip. In Ludhiana and surrounding Punjab regions, air quality and seasonal allergens are frequent culprits.
Treatment options range from nasal corticosteroid sprays and saline rinses to minimally invasive procedures like Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) for severe or recurring cases.
A specialist nasal examination helps identify the root cause of congestion and sinus issues.
2. Nasal polyps
Nasal polyps are soft, painless growths inside the nasal passages or sinuses. They develop as a result of ongoing inflammation — often linked to allergies, asthma, or recurrent infections. Patients typically notice that their nose feels permanently blocked even when they are not unwell, and they may lose their sense of smell over time.
Left untreated, polyps can grow large enough to completely obstruct airflow. Fortunately, they respond well to medical therapy — and when needed, surgical removal offers lasting relief.
3. Allergic rhinitis
Sneezing, a runny or itchy nose, and watery eyes that flare up with the seasons or around dust and pet dander are classic signs of allergic rhinitis. It affects a significant proportion of people across North India. While antihistamines offer short-term relief, identifying and managing your specific triggers — through allergy testing and immunotherapy when appropriate — delivers far better long-term results.
"Many of my patients are surprised to learn that their chronic 'sinus headache' is actually allergic rhinitis. The right diagnosis changes everything about how we treat it."
Common Throat Concerns
1. Recurrent sore throat & tonsillitis
The occasional sore throat triggered by a cold or dry weather is normal. But if you are experiencing throat pain, difficulty swallowing, or swollen tonsils more than four or five times a year, this is recurrent tonsillitis — a condition that warrants a proper evaluation. In children especially, enlarged tonsils can also affect sleep and breathing.
Depending on frequency and severity, management may include antibiotics, lifestyle changes, or a tonsillectomy — a straightforward procedure with a high success rate.
A thorough throat examination can identify infections, structural issues, and early warning signs.
2. Hoarseness & voice changes
A voice that has become rough, weak, or noticeably different for more than two to three weeks should always be assessed by an ENT doctor. While hoarseness often stems from vocal strain or acid reflux, it can occasionally indicate more serious conditions including vocal cord nodules or, rarely, laryngeal cancer. Early evaluation makes all the difference in outcomes.
3. Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
Swallowing difficulty — whether a feeling that food is getting stuck, pain on swallowing, or the sensation of a lump in the throat — deserves prompt attention. Causes range from GERD and thyroid swelling to structural abnormalities or tumours. A laryngoscopy or imaging study can quickly identify the problem and guide appropriate treatment.
Warning Signs: When to See a Specialist
Nosebleeds that won't stop
Frequent or heavy nosebleeds lasting more than 10 minutes need specialist evaluation.
Voice change beyond 3 weeks
Persistent hoarseness is never normal and must be investigated promptly.
Snoring or sleep apnea
Loud snoring, gasping, or daytime fatigue may signal obstructive sleep apnea.
A lump in the neck or throat
Any new unexplained swelling or lump should be examined without delay.
Congestion lasting 10+ days
Prolonged nasal blockage suggests sinusitis or polyps, not just a cold.
Swallowing difficulty
Painful or obstructed swallowing always warrants a specialist review.
